Debt

HI,
I have some credit card debt that I have not paid for about a year. If I did make payments, they were way below the minimum. I have gotten calls from people who say they are now sending my debt to something and charging me with fraud. They also say that my debt is going to double now. Every time I have spoken with someone who has called I have told them that I have been writing letters to the creditors and telling them that I am intending on paying the debt in full and I am keeping track of my payments to them. The person also said that my liscense to practice my work is in jeopardy. Is this legal for them to threaten me with these statements? Can they double my debt and take away my liscense to do my job? My friend said it is just thier way of trying to get me to pay the debt. As far as I know I have not been called to court only these threatning calls.

According to the FTC's

According to the FTC's website, threatening arrest in an effort to intimidate someone into paying a debt is a violation of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (the federal consumer protection law that regulates what debt collectors can and cannot do).

You mentioned that the debt collector threatened to charge you with fraud, which is a crime. So, I would contact an attorney who handles FDCPA cases and see what he or she says.
