How can they garnish wages after I paid bill?
Hello,
I'm from Colorado Springs and am going through some real issues with a collector, Accounts Service of Colorado. I rec'd a letter around 4/5/07 regarding hospital charges for 797.00. I sent them 100.00 and a letter asking them to send me a break down of the bill and what insurance paid. We were having issues with the insurance company denying claims because of inaccurate info from the hospital. We had to resubmit several times for payment. Anyway, they cashed the 100.00 check and never sent the info requested. Then on 4/24/07 they came to my job with a notice of judgement. I called the office immediately, spoke with Mary, who said I had to pay the full amount of 697.00 if I didn't want to go to court on 5/22/07. She said if I didn't I'd have to go to court and would end up owing more. So the next day I got a credit line increase from the bank where I work, a loan, basically, purchased a cashiers check for the full amount of 697.00 and mailed it. That was 4/25/2007. I didn't hear from them again until 6/22/07, when they came back to my job, this time with wage garnishment papers for 459.00. Their courier showed the papers around the lobby to different emloyees before finally getting to the manager. So much for privacy, the whole bank knows my business now. They evidently held the cashiers check until 5/22/07, went to court, tacked on more fees, and garnished my wages with no notification to me at all. On top of that, when I asked for a copy of the garnishment to fax to my prepaid legal attorney I was told I wasn't allowed to have one because the courts sent it to the employer and not me. So these people can do whatever they want, lie, deceive, tack on charges at their whim and I have absolutely no rights. A bank employee that has her wages garnished does not look good, so on top of it all theres two years of working hard, gaining trust and resposibilities flushed down the drain. This all happened Friday, I spoke with the attorney Monday and still haven't heard anything back. Do I really have no rights??
