Paying more than owed

In 2002, I received a notice from a collection agency that I owed $18,648.38..I couldn't pay the whole amount so, I set up a payment plan. $300.00 a month, which I have payed without fail...but now after looking closer at the amount still owed, which is $8,758.67..I think I'm being used...Yes, the account is with NCO but they lady I deal with is very nice. I've to date paid over $19,000. Should I contact someone for help
