What are the laws in Texas that apply to a consumer who is in collections. Can a credit card company or bank garnish my wages? Also, is it legal in Texas to place a lien on my home for the uncollected debt?

WHAT TO DO WHEN BEING SUED

MY SPOUSE IS FROM IRAN AND HAS A FIRST NAME OF MOHAMMAD. SHORTLY AFTER 9-11 MY HUSBAND LOST HIS JOB AS DID ALL THE MIDDLE EASTERN MEN WORKING IN THE COMPANY WHERE MY HUSBAND WAS EMPLOYED. AFTER BUILDING A LIFE STYLE AROUND 2 SOLID INCOMES, BEING CUT TO 1 INCOME IS DIFFICULT. THE ONLY SOLUTION WE HAD WAS TO LIVE OFF OF CREDIT CARDS AND MY INCOME WHICH WAS TIGHT TO SAY THE LEAST BUT HELPED US SURVIVIE. THINKING MY HUSBAND WOULD FIND ANOTHER JOB QUICKLY WAS ONLY A MYTH. HE WAS COPLETLY OUT OF WORK FOR ALMOST 4 YEARS FOLLOWING AND NOW CAN ONLY GET TEMP JOBS ONCE IN A WHILE. AFTER NEARLY CLAIMING BANCRUPTCY AND ALMOST LOSING OUR HOUSE LAST YEAR(SEPT 05), WE TURNED OUR CREDIT CARDS OVER TO A DEBT MANAGEMENT COMPANY AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO BANCRUPTCY.

Texas law as pertains to the debtor

Can you please explain to me in laymans terms the law with respect to debtors? I received a letter from an attorney stating they intend to file a lawsuit on behalf of the original creditor. I am involved with a debt negotiation company and I want to know what my rights are and what could potentially happen if I am taken to court.
