Nursing Home Illegally Collected Debts

Maryland’s Attorney General accused Clearview Nursing Home in Hagerstown, Md. of using aggressive tactics to collect debts from residents and their relatives that were not owed. The AG’s Consumer Protection Division also accused the nursing home of getting “financial guarantees” from relatives, which is illegal in Maryland. Furthermore, the collection agency they hired (CollectAssure, Inc., which was also using aggressive tactics) was operating without a license to collect debt in Maryland.

Though Clearview Nursing Home denied any wrongdoing, they reached settlements and the Consumer Protection Division will contact people who may be entitled to restitution.

Animated Debt Collector?

Towson, MD-based collection agency, Access Receivables Management, now has an animated debt collector, named Katie.

Instead of being hounded by debt collectors and incessant collector calls, you can now go online and meet Katie who will gladly accept your money, or schedule your payments.

The president of Access said in a press release that Katie offers debtors convenience and customer service and will yield better results over time. (So if the absence of online convenience and a cartoon character were the only things holding you back from repaying a debt to Access, wait no longer!)
